The cooling system in an engine has six components: the radiator, the radiator cap, the hoses, the Coolant/Radiator Fluid, the thermostat and the water pump. The water pump is literally the heart of the system. Just as your heart keeps your blood circulating through your body, the water pump keeps coolant circulating through your engine.
The water pump is driven by a belt, chain, or gear and only operates while the engine is running. It has a limited life span and will eventually have to be replaced. You can check your owner's manual to determine how long your Coolant or Radiator fluid should last. Some can last 30,000 miles (64,000 kilometres), but almost all last up to 150,000 miles (160,000 kilometres). Water pumps can fail in two ways: they can spring a leak, or their bearings fail. Leaks can come from a cracked pump/ radiator housing or the hoses.
If you see coolant leaking in your car or on the driveway, please call the folks at Speedy Lube first for complete guidance. Many radiator fluid leaks aren't visible, so when you take your car in for your regular oil change, the expert technicians at Speedy Lube will check all your vehicle's major components and alert you of any signs or wear. If your water pump is run by the timing or serpentine belt, it should be replaced when you replace the belt. Most timing or serpentine belts must be replaced at around 60,000 to 90,000 miles (100,000 to 150,000 kilometres).
Servicing your car always at Speedy Lube will ensure that your car's components will stay up to date. Radiator fluid are a vehicle care issue that almost all of us face eventually. They don't last forever. On the other hand, we can extend the life of most of our vehicle's components through preventive maintenance. Just as exercise and diet keep our hearts healthy, regular check-ups and fluid changes will keep our vehicles healthy. Talk to your friendly and knowledgeable Speedy Lube service Advisors.
